Create and manage special events
One of the
enjoyable volunteer jobs that many NETs currently do involves running an
English club, often called the English Speaking Society (ESS). The activities vary from school to
school depending on student interest, but are generally a fun time. A surprising aspect of ESS is that
generally, few students are involved.
This is because, as a club, ESS competes with all the other clubs
including dozens of after school sports clubs and several music clubs. Most schools have well over 50 clubs
and most ESS clubs meet just once a week.
A student who joins ESS may have to give up a sports club because the
rules of the other clubs include mandatory daily attendance.
This is where
full-time NETs could be better used to coordinate activities between
schools. These activities could
include organizing speech competitions, or starting an Osaka-Fu wide English
newspaper, or organizing English interviews of some of the many famous
celebrities who pass through Osaka at Universal Studios or sports events. Currently, there is no opportunity to
grow such a program because part-timers are never expected to develop new
programs at all. It’s time to hire
full-time NETs who would easily be able to develop such programs.
８、スピーチコンテストなどのイベントの開催と運営
多くのNETが、楽しくボランティアで関わっている仕事に、しばしばESSとよばれる英語クラブの運営があります。この活動は、生徒の興味に応じて学校で様々ですが、総じて楽しい活動です。ESSに入る生徒が、あまりいないことは驚きです。これは、放課後のクラブ活動がスポーツや音楽のクラブがあるからだと思われます。ほとんどの学校では、５０以上のクラブが活動していますが、ESSは、週に一度の活動がほとんどです。ESSに入る生徒は、クラブ活動の規則が厳しいので運動クラブの活動を断念しなければなりません。
正規のNETは、学校間のクラブ活動のコーディネートができます。例えば、スピーチコンテストの組織化、大阪府英語新聞の作成、ユニバーサルスタジオやスポーツイベントにきた有名人にインタビューしたりといった活動です。現在、私たちがパートタイムの職員であるためそのようなプログラムを推進することができません。このようなプログラムを発展させることのできる正規のNETを雇う時期がきているのです。
