Experienced native English teachers are often asked to teach independently rather than with a Japanese English teacher. This is beneficial to teachers and students and reasonable because these teachers are highly competent and have earned the trust of the English Departments. However, teaching independently is currently forbidden in our contracts.
This is a disturbing imbalance. If we follow our English Departments and work as teachers rather than assistants we can help save time and energy. Many of us are titled teachers in our home countries or have taught university classes; we are experienced and qualified teachers. Yet, the Osaka Board of Education has refused to recognize our talents or respect our skills.
It is time that our contracts match our actual work; it is time for an official solo teaching qualification.
